Nowadays, more and more pools are being built with salt chlorine generators for sanitation purposes. Salt pools continue to rise in popularity because they are softer on the skin and require less maintenance needs, overall. If you are looking to clean a pool salt cell yourself, use our guide below.
Cleaning A Salt Cell
The salt cell is responsible for consistently sanitizing the pool by producing chlorine automatically. However, it is not true that the cell requires zero maintenance. Pool owners should ensure the salt cell is inspected about every 3-6 months, depending, of course, on how much the pool is used. Some cells feature an indicator light that will tell you when to inspect them. You will need to clean the cell in the event of a calcium build-up on the blades inside the cell.
Cleaning a salt cell calls for a Salinity Cell Cleaner that is specifically designed for saltwater pools. This cleaner will remove calcium buildup, which ultimately impacts your salt chlorinator’s performance. To use the cleaner properly, follow the DIY steps outlined below.
Steps To Clean A Pool Salt Cell
Before you start this process, it’s important to note that each manufacturer will sell their own plug or cap separately for cleaning purposes. If you do not have a cap or plug, you will need to get one at this time.
Step 1. Begin by turning the pump off.
Step 2. Remove the cell at the unions, then unplug it from the power supply.
Step 3. Cover the fins inside the cell by pouring cell cleaner over them.
Step 4. The solution will bubble up to break up the calcium for about the next 20 minutes or so.
Step 5. Discard the solution by safely returning it to the pool.
Step 6. Rinse the cell using a hose.
Step 7. Reattach the cell at the unions, then plug it back into the power supply.
Step 8. Turn your pump back on.
Step 9. Reset the inspection indicator, if applicable.
