If you have a saltwater pool, it’s important to have a maintenance checklist nearby all throughout the year. Follow our guide below for weekly, monthly and yearly maintenance needs.
Weekly Saltwater Pool Maintenance
Every pool owner should make it a habit to clean the pool and all filters as often as they can. Performing these simple tasks can save pool owners time and money in the long run. Any saltwater cleaning must include the skimmer. Do this by emptying the pump basket and skim for any noticeable debris in the pool area.
Make it a weekly task to test the pool’s pH and free chlorine. Adjust your generator if the chlorine level is off by a bit. Baking soda, muriatic acid or sodium carbonate can be used to raise a pH level.
Perform These Saltwater Pool Maintenance Tasks Weekly:
❒ Check water for clarity/color changes.
❒ Remove any debris from the area.
❒ Empty the skimmer and pump strainer baskets.
❒ Run pool cleaner or vacuum pool.
❒ Check pool filter/backwash.
❒ Check water level.
❒ Test the salt concentration level.
❒ Test the free chlorine level.
❒ Test/adjust pH level.
Monthly Saltwater Pool Maintenance
Check these four things each and every month: salinity, stabilizer, alkalinity and calcium. Reference your owner’s manual to see exactly where all levels need to be. Baking soda can again be applied to raise the alkalinity level.
The saltwater cell should also be inspected routinely. The pool professionals recommend checking the cell every three months. You will also want to visually inspect the pool for any scale or deposit buildups.
Perform These Saltwater Pool Maintenance Tasks Monthly:
❒ Test the Total Alkalinity (TA).
❒ Test the Total Dissolved Solids level.
❒ Test the Stabilizer or Cyanuric Acid level.
❒ Test the calcium hardness level.
❒ See if any hard materials, such as iron or copper, are present.
Yearly Saltwater Pool Maintenance
Yearly maintenance, of course, will change based on location. In Arizona, for example, pool owners do not have to winterize or close their swimming areas. In most other parts of the country, though, these tasks must be done according to the owner’s manual.
Perform These Saltwater Pool Maintenance Tasks Yearly:
❒ Perform proper winterizing and/or closing procedures, if necessary.
❒ Open the pool properly in the spring.
❒ Clean the salt cell and store inside.
