WHAT IS AN ACID WASH FOR A POOL?

Your pool may be the highlight of your outdoor area, serving as the centerpiece for social gatherings. This means any type of algae build-up, calcium deposits or stains can be a major concern for homeowners. Taking on these undesirable stains may require the acid washing process. This procedure is typically carried out by pool professions.

Acid washing can only be performed in pools featuring either Pebble Tec or plaster surfaces. Professionals will be able to take a look at your pool prior to the cleaning to determine the best possible cleaning method. If the professionals deem your plaster to be too thin, then the acid washing cannot be completed. At this point, your only option may be to resurface the pool altogether.

SHOULD YOU ACID WASH YOUR POOL?

All pools require routine maintenance to keep the water clean and prevent the build-up of both algae and stains. When you neglect your pool area, algae may stain the surface, making the water feel slimy. If the water becomes stagnant and it is hard to see the pool floor, it’s time to drain the water for an acid washing. If calcium deposits have caused discoloration, this is another sign that now is the time to drain the pool. Is acid washing truly a necessary evil during cleaning season? Magnesium or copper stains have been known to cause plaster discoloration, turning white to blue. Calcium deposits have also shown to cause deterioration. Unfortunately, oftentimes these stains or deposits cannot be removed by scrubbing the surface. Acid washing is necessary whenever you want to completely cleanse your pool area of any stains or growths. Call the professionals whenever you notice algae growth. Algae may appear either black, green or yellow. It’s wise to invest in a proper and thorough acid washing service at this time.

HOW POOL ACID WASHING WORKS

Acid washing involves spraying your pool’s surface with a combination of muriatic acid and water to remove any grime and/or build-up. A professional pool service will then use a brush to scrub out the stains. This chemical wash will allow for easy removal of algae and other staining that has built up on the pool’s surface.

WHAT TYPES OF ALGAE AND STAINS CAN ACID WASHING REMOVE?

Whether your pool’s surface is made of plaster or Pebble Tec, different kinds of algae and staining can occur. Let’s take a look at some of the common reasons why an acid wash is necessary.

ALGAE

Algae is undoubtedly the most common type of staining that pool owners encounter. Causes of algae growth include low pool circulation, lack of upkeep and improper pH balance. Lots of algae growth can end up causing health issues along with clogged pool filters. Pool acid washing can remove and prevent algae growth.

HARD WATER

Also known as scum, hard water stains, are created from calcium deposits. These deposits are typically found along the edge of the pool where tile meets water. Hard water stains often lead to cloudy water and a lower pH level. Pool acid washing can remove these unwanted stains.

COPPER STAINS

Copper stains are similar to magnesium stains, creating green, blue and black stains around the pool area. Thankfully, these stains can be eradicated during an acid wash.

MAGNESIUM STAINS

Magnesium may be present in your pool depending on the type of water used to fill the pool. Too much magnesium can create pink, red and black discolorations.

ACID WASH OR POOL CLEANING?

Routine pool cleanings do not include draining the pool. Typical pool cleaning procedures are comprised of the following:

  • Scrubbing sides and surfaces with a pool brush.
  • Removing leaves/sticks and debris with a pool net.
  • Cleaning and/or replacing pool filter cartridges.
  • Testing/adjusting pool chemical levels.

Acid washing is a more significant undertaking. It involves completely draining the pool, then applying an acid solution to remove a layer of the pool’s surface. This, in turn, removes any stains or calcium deposits.
